New 2008 - 2009 Schedule: Classes | Schedule | Register Now

If variety is the spice of life, then things sure get pretty darn spicy here at Jackie’s.

To keep things interesting, we continue to add new styles to our dance curriculum. With such a range to choose from, our students are bound to find just the right niche for their taste and personal development.

Ballet ( child | adult )

Ballet is the de facto standard for students with a passion for dance. Poetic, fluid and very expressive, the classical dance requires supreme discipline and focus. Along with strength and balance, ballet students gain stamina, control and introspection.

Jackie’s Jammin Studios offers several progressive ballet classes at all skill levels:

Ballet I provides a good introduction to the dance for those with little or no previous experience. The class highlights individual steps and elementary jumps. At the end of the course, students combine two to three steps into a simple combination.

Ballet II is separated into two groups, intermediate and advanced, to accommodate students of varying skill from basic ballet instruction. The nine positions of the body and the nine arabesques are covered. The class introduces turns, jumps and beats, then adds more steps into the combinations.

Ballet III develops extensions, strength, clarity of steps, and multiple turns and jumps. Combinations now include intermediate-level steps. Barre and center work are covered, along with across-the-floor movements. Pointe work may be covered, depending upon student progress.

Ballet IV delves into advanced ballet techniques. With a strong grasp of the five types of jumps, nine body positions and five arabesques, students concentrate on stamina and control, strength and speed, extension and musicality.

Ballet V challenges students to take their body and dancing beyond the teachings of classical ballet. Students further work on their strength, speed, stamina and extensions. Center work focuses on contemporary ballet as adapted from classical technique. Combinations now include a variety of steps to be repeated at varying tempos and reversed to challenge the body and brain.

Pointe I is an introduction to proper pointe technique and focuses on strengthening and balancing en pointe. Students perform a variety of barre exercises and move to the center when ready.

Pointe II allows students to execute steps on one leg, travel across the floor, and make turns. Advanced students work on improving existing skills and foot work.

Funky Ballet puts a modern and exciting style on ballet, replacing traditional classical music with tunes from current artists. The Funky Ballet class is a great alternative for students with a love for dance and modern music. Funky Ballet is a Ballet II-level course that requires a year of previous ballet experience.

Tap ( child | adult )

Want to learn some fancy footwork? Then our tap dance classes are for you! This classic dance style, made popular by Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Gregory Hines, is a fun and relaxing way to learn dance, meet people and create some rhythm! Our progressive tap classes are a great way to increase stamina, develop concentration, and improve your memory.

Jackie’s Jammin Studios caters to your skill levels with the following courses:

Beginner Tap introduces the basics with shuffles, flaps and ball changes, and then they demonstrate what they’ve learned in simple combinations.

Intermediate Tap teaches advanced steps like wings, time steps and breaks. Students increase their skills and improve rhythm to prepare for more challenging combinations.

Advanced Tap offers students the opportunity to hone the skills learned in previous courses in preparation for the most challenging combinations yet.

Jazz ( child | adult )

Energetic and engaging, or reflective and expressive? Whichever you choose, Jackie’s has the perfect jazz dance class for you. With both styles, students learn to go beyond dance and into performance – incorporating personality and acting into the number to develop their unique stage presence. In addition to Jazz, we offer classes in Broadway Jazz and Lyrical Jazz.

In Broadway Jazz, students learn how to perform the steps and moves from famous Broadway productions. Taught in the tradition of Bob Fosse, the class is a lively and fun experience that gives everyone a chance to shine.

The Lyrical Jazz class offers a softer style of jazz dance that combines elements of Broadway jazz with the fluid, poetic movements of ballet. A more pensive style, lyrical jazz is well suited for those interested in interpretive dance.

* Due to the complex rhythms and concentration demanded of the classes, Broadway Jazz and Lyrical Jazz are recommended only for students with at least two years of previous jazz dance experience.

Modern ( child | adult )

Just as modern art and modern music defy conventional methods, modern dance bends and breaks the rules of dance. The Modern Dance class is ideal for students attracted to an expressive, theatrical style without the boundary restrictions of ballet. With the Modern Dance class, students develop endurance, gain flexibility and build strength.

Acrobatics ( child )

Acrobatics is the perfect marriage of gymnastics and dance, producing a display that is both technically sound and strikingly beautiful. Students learn how to balance, become flexible, and express themselves through acrobatic movements.

Hip Hop ( child | adult )

Bold, energetic, and a showcase for individual expression, hip hop dance brings the musical language of the street and plants it firmly into mainstream culture. Today’s top artists, including Justin Timberlake, and popular reality shows such as So You Think You Can Dance often incorporate hip hop moves into their productions. In this fun class, students learn the importance of balance, endurance and flexibility. And, after mastering basic hip hop moves and attitudes, students develop their own style and choreography.

Flamenco ( adult )

Robust and elegant. Lovely and powerful. Flamenco, with roots in Spanish, Arabic and Indian cultures, seamlessly blends strength and beauty through a rhythmic style that commands attention. Students develop coordination, expression and rhythm as they learn singing, hand-clapping and other elements definitive of the dance.

Belly Dance ( adult )

Characterized by continual hip and arm movements, belly dance is the rhythmic dance from the Middle East that is gaining popularity in the U.S. Known as much for colorful costumes and exotic music as the dance itself, belly dance is a great opportunity for artistic self-expression and physical fitness. Students develop coordination and rhythm while getting a great leg and cardio workout!

Kung Fu ( child | adult )

A tremendous combination of exercise and self defense, the martial art of kung fu also offers relief from mental stress. During progressive levels of instruction, students learn proper punching, kicking, blocking, joint-locking and throw techniques. And, in the process, they also gain confidence, discipline, coordination, flexibility, stamina and speed.
